The Rusted Relics of Abandoned Cars

Imagine opening the barn doors at your grandfather’s farm, only to discover a treasure trove of long-forgotten classic cars? Or, perhaps, you’re one of those lucky individuals who discovers a rare automobile tucked inside an abandoned storage unit.

The world is full of things that have been set aside and forgotten about. From valuable artwork that ends up getting lost in someone’s attic to gorgeous homes that are left behind to rot and crumble to cars and trucks that are abandoned in some of the most unique and odd places.

But there is beauty in the decay that is left behind, which has been captured by some of the most hauntingly beautiful photos of abandoned cars.

And, of course, when I’m referring to abandoned cars, I’m not talking about some random Mazda left on the side of the highway. I’m talking about true relics that have been sitting in the same place for years, sometimes decades. The kind of car or truck that you can tell was once well-loved but has since been cast off.

These unwanted and discarded vehicles hold a sense of melancholy; and the mix of rusted metal, shattered glass, and decaying structures are the subject of some stunning photos.

For some, the fascination with abandoned vehicles comes from the treasure hunter buried deep inside all of us. Could this be a rare find that would lead to fame and fortune? For others, it’s the nostalgic remembrance of the lives that these cars were once trusted to carry back and forth.

When we look at one of these relics that has been permanently parked in some odd location – such as in the middle of a field, hidden away in storage, or even in the middle of a lake – we can’t help but wonder why. Why was this car simply left behind? Was it too hard to try to remove the car from its current spot? Did the owner simply forget about it? Did the car hold some sentimental value that made it too hard to simply let it go to the junkyard?

Those abandoned trucks that can often be seen in farm fields, is it simply more convenient to leave it there, or is that meant as a shrine to a hard-working vehicle that served its family well?

There are some famous stories of people who inherited an old farm, only to discover a valuable collection of vintage cars that had been tucked away on the property for nearly 50 years. There are people who moved into their new home and found that the owner didn’t bother moving an old and broken down car out of the garage, which ended up being worth more than the house. And there are cars that have been uncovered after spending decades locked away in storage units.

But for most of the vehicles we see in our every day lives or the ones pictured online, we may never know the full story behind the how, when, and why that particular car or truck was left behind.

Despite that, or perhaps because of it, some of the photos that have been captured over time are uniquely beautiful. These cars take on a new life as old relics, and have become a source of fascination for many photographers, both amateurs and pros.

If you want to explore this uniquely beautiful world, Art & Home has put together a stunning collection of photographs of abandoned cars for you to explore on your own, without leaving the comfort of your home.

With over 100 photos gathered from around the world, you can explore a wide range of fascinating images of abandoned cars and trucks and wonder how these classic vehicles came to such a tragic end.
